VALE OF PNATH - The Prodigal Empire (2011)

VALE OF PNATH

The Epitaph's Rating: 11 / 10

As a tweaker's fear is placated once he gets his dirty, shame-coated fingers on the piece he's been trekking all day for so was my inner yearning to hear a metal album that defied the laws of life itself.

I stumbled upon Vale of Pnath haphazardly (late night YouTube video hopping) and the realm in which I knew to be my existence would forever be altered.
Having never heard this Denver, Colorado-based technical melodic death metal quintet, I was actually dreading clicking on the video because all I saw in their description was "SHRED /// SHRED /// SHRED /// SHRED".
"Just fuckin' great", I thought to myself, "more wankery to add to the heaping pile".
Oh sweet Lawd, how wrong I was!

Vale of Pnath is definitely one of the most talented bands I have heard this year. They do an impeccable job of combining technicality, complexity, brutality and melody into a cohesive element that does not seem forced in any way. Every single song on The Prodigal Empire is epic. Every song stands out and every song has emotion.

This album has been playing in my house for a solid twenty-four hours non-stop and I still can't get enough of it. There's something in this album that makes you keep coming back.

The guitars are insanely tight! Some of the most original riffs and patterns I've come across this year, with enough spunk to make your head spin and wonder how the fuck they pulled it off, in addition to their ability to make those same songs have groove and room to throw your body in agonizing fits of convulsive shocks. The precision with which guitarists Vance Valenzuela and Mikey Reeves execute these monolithic songs at the speed they are written is absolutely mind-blowing. Keep an eye out for these guys as I won't be surprised of their future notoriety.

Vocalist Ken Sarafin is extremely versatile and talented - a perfect match for this project. I'm amazed at how he flows with the songs, in all their different dimensions of emotion. There are few death metal vocalists that make me want to scream along with them. Well, this is one more to add my limited list. This grotesque sounding motherfucker gets into your soul and plants seedlings of fear and waters them with your tears! (Not sure what the fuck that is supposed to mean...but you get my drift...)

It's a rare occasion when you listen to a 9-track technical death metal album and get pissed off when it ends. I frantically screamed at the gods below for more tracks, but alas, they too don't seem to listen to my prayers!

In my opinion, this album is flawless.
Do yourself a favour: buy this album, support this band and travel with me deep into the Vale.

Favourite tracks on this album: Mental Crucifixion, Poisoned By Prosperity, Time Of Reckoning & Legacy of Loss

CATUVOLCUS - Terres De Sang (2010)

CATUVOLCUS

The Epitaph's Rating: 8 / 10

No folks, this is not the King Catuvolcus who was unable to endure the labours of war and flight, who poisoned himself after imprecating curses upon Ambiorix in 53 BC. These are 3 French Canadians who claim to compose "Gaul Folk/Black Metal". Do yourself a favor and experience their music via this EP, Terres De Sang and thou shalt not be disappointed.

This 6 song release is flavored with various elements from chants, acoustic elements, orchestrations, and a barrage of black/folk metal brutality. This particular listener doesn't commonly listen to this genre of music, so my opinions are rather biased, although I can appreciate the quality of writing that these Canucks have presented here.

Commencing with an epic battle sequence of clashing swords and Calvary charging the battle field, Catuvolcus creates a grand orchestral introduction that draws this listener in. Then a barrage of black/folk metal elements begin that will most certainly captivate any listener with their riff after riff of fused melodies, witch screams and whispered calls. All of this along with aggressive drumming and that typical epic length of black metal songs we're accustomed to, builds it up to end with a strong French horn instrumental sound piece.

The guitars although tend to be muddy, showcase their epic anthems with their variety of riffing between acoustic and electric double pickings. The drums are hard hitting with the expected double kicks interspersed throughout but limit any true fast grinds as commonly represented in the genre. Vocally I am not personally a fan of the high-end style of screaming and whispered calls but appreciate its solid execution on this EP.

The production of this release is well balanced yet a little muddy for my tastes as it seems overly compressed. Yet instruments are well balanced and hard hitting in the black metal genre. Although the songs don't seem to vary enough musically the writing style is above average. Catuvolcus have released a solid EP with Terres De Sang for any black metal fan - old or new.

My personal favorite element of this band is their logo design! Just fuckin' awesome! The CD graphics however, I believe they could use some more creativity (as they obviously possess) and clarity as it's hard to interpret both with the font choice and the imagery.

All in all, a great find. One of the perks of helping out with The Ottawa Epitaph is getting to review these hidden gems found throughout our great Nation and being exposed to talented bands such as this. Let's hope they come to Ottawa soon!

KORPIUS - Shades of Black (2011)

KORPIUS

The Epitaph's Rating: 9 / 10

I'm just going to go balls deep in this bitch right now! This was the most surprising album I have listened to all year! This is one amazing fucking record - bottom line, period, full stop!
I received the album in the mail from Maple Metal Records and had no idea what to really expect. I mean, I never really heard of these guys and when I opened the CD booklet, I noticed that it was a self-recorded effort. Needless to say, I totally underestimated KORPIUS and the talent behind the band!

First off, this self-recorded album is incredibly well-done. The song structures, the riffs, the solos, the black-death-thrash combination of influences and the production is second to none! On that note, the production on this album is incredible. This is one of the cleanest metal album I have heard this year. It has such a full sound where every aspect of each instrument is pristinely defined and captured.
This definitely took me by surprise.

The album opens with the title track "Shades of Black" and it is one fucking delicious treat! At first you're not sure what to make of KORPIUS' style as it leans itself towards a thrash-death feel. The vocals kick in and there you have the black metal vocal and lyrical influence.
Each song is different one to the other but the album still retains a cohesiveness and a direction that has been obviously crafted by intellectual design.

There are some really catchy riffs laced throughout this album. Check out the track "Fury" for some of the best hooks written this year. That song in particular encompasses so many different flavors - from Dream Theatre to Decapitated - that it's a dish you order again and again!

The musicianship is phenomenal and the energy behind the album is contagious. All in all, I think this is one of metal's secret treasures that is on the verge of discovery! There is something in this album for every metal head out there! KORPIUS' Shades of Black is one album that, if you don't listen to, will haunt you in the realm of eternal regret!

DISSENTIENT - Black Hole Machine (2011)

DISSENTIENT

The Epitaph's Rating: 11 / 10

Suddenly - without warning or preparation - came a destruction so swift and so malign that the aftermath would forever embed itself into the fabric of history. No adequate amount of preparation could have saved us from the annihilating Black Hole Machine. DISSENTIENT's indestructible creation was designed to obliterate any living organism. This is not an album. This is not just another progressive death metal masterpiece. No! DISSENTIENT's Black Hole Machine is an entity that always was and forever will be. It is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.
This is the last album you will ever hear and the only one you will ever need!
This is Ottawa's proudest moment.

Incubating in the dark recesses of Phill Campbell's psyche, DISSENTIENT has been growing into its existence since 2005. After periods of change and upheaval, Campbell's vision for a project that would incorporate elements of black, death and progressive metal has become what it is now: an unstoppable force.
Fused with some of the catchiest and chunkiest riffs around, matched with robotic precision drumming, vocal tones that are as deep as Hell's Abyss and an energy that rattles your very core, DISSENTIENT's full-length release is truly amazing.

Recorded locally at Pebble Studios with the engineering wizardry of Mike Bond (www.producedbybond.com), Black Hole Machine is one of the best produced albums of 2011. Every instrument is heard and nothing is out of place. The guitar solos on this album are spectacularly executed with magnificent tone and definition.
Vocally, this album is ab-so-fucking-lutely incredible. Phill Campbell's guttural attack is killer and there are a few tracks that have successfully incorporated clean and melodic vocals. Now before you go off on your own little tangent, give it a try. This is clean vocals done right.
As I said, there is nothing that is out of place on this album. Everything is meant to be exactly where it is.

Inside The Machine

I must say, when I first saw the length of the tracks I was a little worried that I would lose interest after a while. I forgot what "progressive" meant and immediately passed judgment on the album and the band as a whole. Well, I have to tell you, I was completely fucking wrong. In my mind, the tracks aren't long enough! Whenever a song finishes, especially one like the title track Black Hole Machine, which starts off with an intense black metal-industrial attack then moulds into a beautiful melodic metal demon only to switch gears and run at you full speed with some groovy-as-fuck death metal...I would scream for more.
Fortunately, the next track starts to play and eases that panicked sense of loss and grief!

Incorporeal is by far, hands down, the one best songs on this album. My entire demeanour changes when I listen to this song. I immediately feel restless and want to run out, break jaws and burn nurseries! This song is relentlessly intense from beginning to end with an exceptionally unique guitar solo that shreds and captivates.
Having seen this band live, I know that what I'm hearing on the record is EXACTLY what I'll hear live. These fuckers are tight.
Their drummer Taylor Calderone is not human - he truly is the machine! He knows when to blast and when to groove. You can tell just by listening to this record that DISSENTIENT really feel their music. Their approach to their instruments, with every ounce of passion within their souls, is what makes this album stand out. It's just different than all of the cookie cutter shit out there today. An amazing example of this would be their song Eternal. Fuck, it's just too damn good!
One track that really gripped me and surprised me was Destination Nowhere. This song just has that extra little punch to it...and I can't quite put my finger on it. All I know, it's one of the songs that I hit the repeat button and listen to over and over.
Maybe it's the amazing 80's inspired guitar solo or the catchy "DESTINATION NOWHERE" chant afterwards...I don't know. All I know is that this particular song is one that I can't wait to see played live.

I can go on and on and on, dissecting each track off this album. This has been the only album that has been playing in my car for the last week and with good reason. This is death metal the way it's supposed to be done. DISSENTIENT did more than just produce an amazing record - they have set the standard here in Ottawa for musicianship and intensity.

You need to grab this album as soon as you can and don't struggle as the Black Hole Machine will begin to consume your very life.

INSURRECTION - Fracture (2010)

INSURRECTION

The Epitaph's Rating: 10 / 10

This 5-piece monstrosity has struck again with precision, aggression and near perfection!
INSURRECTION delivers a one of a kind album - solid and crushing from beginning to end.  Fracture was released in December of 2010 and in my opinion, was the best way to close off the year. It was also an accurate prophecy of the INSURRECTION aftermath soon to come!

Formed in 2003, INSURRECTION have played countless shows and have continued to radically improve themselves year after year.  Listening to Fracture got me so fucking excited to see them play live again as they never fail to deliver an amazingly energetic performance. Every single song on Fracture was intricately designed to be played at a show.  They have relied on their live experience, knowing what the crowd responds to and what loses their interest in order to make each of these 11 tracks stand right the fuck out.  This record has some of the best grooves you'll ever hear, the catchiest melodies around and an overall contagious charisma.

Breaking it down!
Musically, this album is fucking incredible. Phil Latreille is a cyborg, I'm convinced of it! His drumming is insanely precise, tight and crushing to the very core. He knows exactly how to take you from one level and transplant you into the next. Fusing his skills and natural cyborg instincts with the incredibly creative guitar work of Martin Sampson and Vincent Seguin, Phil's drum work is one to admire.
The guitarists have really pushed the bar on this record and, in my opinion, have written absolute masterpieces. I find this album hard to review due to the fact that it's not just an album - it's a motherfucking experience! Each song has intricacies, harmonies, and personalities of their own and are difficult to regurgitate accurately enough on paper to do it justice. You really just have to listen to this album!  Martin and Vincent have successfully made technicality enjoyable to listen to. They have written some incredibly technical songs, in terms of phrasing and riff structure, without having to be wanked out at a thousand miles per sweeping hour!  Just listen to The Colony & Processed (Deus Ex Machina)!

And the award for most improved musician goes to: Stef Jomphe - vocalist for INSURRECTION! He has tremendously improved from their last (and absolutely fantastic) album Prologue.  There is no wavering in this department on Fracture. He performs each song with his renowned energy and passion. On this record, I noticed that his high-range vocals were exponentially better than I've previously heard, piercing through with animosity yet still retaining that gut slicing bottom end we're so familiar with.  You can't help but want to scream along with him as he tastefully spews his views from the pulpit.
My only complaint was the lack of bass presence as compared to the last album, but my complaint quickly gets washed away when the next track starts to play!
Speaking of which, this album is meant to be played LOUD! Recorded and spawned at Garage Studios with living legend Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, Neuraxis, The Last Felony) Fracture is one of the best produced albums I've heard this year.
Just ask the countless Ottawan's whose heads abruptly turned in horror as I drove by with Fracture playing as loud as my car could go!

INSURRECTION's Fracture is a necessity, simple and plain. This is what metal was intended to sound like.
Buy it now!

Memorable Songs: History Repeats Itself, Set The World On Fire, The Colony, Processed (Deus Ex Machina) & L'Empire des Vautours.

EYELESS - The All Seeing Eye (2010)

EYELESS

The Epitaph's Rating: 8 / 10

Heralding from Quebec, Canada this 4 piece emerged on the scene in 2008 with aims of creating a unique, symphonic death metal band. The trials and tribulations of finding the key members for this project took time but when this foursome finally forged together, they released an impressive full length entitled The All Seeing Eye.

This is a very strong release with amazing textures and elements similar to other successful projects that are in this main vein, predominantly Opeth and Machine Head. This release certainly demonstrates the level of musicianship that Eyeless bring to your ears. At the helm of producing this recording are Eyeless and Maxime Cote who recorded and mixed the record. Mastering for this masterful release was done by the master himself, Pierre Remillard and the graphic design for the CD was done by Ruslan Hanafia (www.myspace.com/vileation).

The result and overall sound fuse melodic harmonic elements with catchy balls out distorted riffs that meld together seamlessly. The songs range from your average length of 4 minutes to 9 minutes which, for progressive symphonic death metal,  tends to be expected. Guitar chops by both David Cloutier and Simon Gag reveal their ease of playing “a perfectly balanced blend of brutal death metal riffs, technical and fast parts, odd time signatures, acoustic, groovy and jazzy interludes” with added fretless bass and strong drums keeping the body all together.

The hooks of the opening track God are sure to get the average head banging freakzoid to bash along with this aggressive track. The second track Reign of Slaves opens with a sitar that will certainly remind listeners of Opeth’s Still Life.

Hallow is an instrumental that demonstrates Eyeless’ balance of clean dynamics and heavy hitting riffing. The melodic interludes are enchanting to listen to and for those who enjoy such projects that are beyond blast beating your face track after track, this album is for you. The title track The All Seeing Eye is a one-of-a-kind killer, hooking you in with slick licks, sweeping solo’s and  a dark, black metal feel that makes you want to feast on this Quebec beast over and over until its left lifeless.  The final moments of The All Seeing Eye is the track called We Leave that brings you down to a melancholy closure after all of the diverse wreckage this band drags you through.

The All Seeing Eye shows Eyeless’ great potential and acts as a greater introduction for the band’s future.
Hope to see these boys in the Nation’s Capital soon.

QUO VADIS - Obitus (Single Track) (2010)

Quo Vadis

The Epitaph's Rating: 10 / 10

I'm going to start by saying that I usually don't care for single track reviews. When I read one, I usually think, "What the fuck do you know and I'll make my own damn opinion, thank you very much."

Having stated all that, I'm selling out.
That's right. I'm selling out.
I will be doing a single track review.

You have to understand though, that, this is not just a single track - it is a progressive experience! This track is, in my opinion, a masterpiece. It captures every element of metal that I love and look for. It has complex riffs, catchy hooks, beautiful guitar solos, sick grooves, sexy bass work, originality and an energy that can only be described as nuclear.

QUO VADIS released their new track Obitus on September 30 of this year on their MySpace page and I have been playing it nearly every day since. Every time I listen to it, I catch something new that I didn't quite catch before - usually with the bass.
Roxanne Constantin showcases her immense musical talent, adding textures and complexity at the right spots. The main guitar riff is just too damn catchy - yet another creation from the crazy mastermind, Bart Frydrychowicz.

At 1:37, the song beautifully blends into a near-orchestral arrangement of piano, bass guitar, fierce drumming, female vocals and sheer intensity. This is something I was not expecting and man, does it ever compliment the song.

Every arrangement of this song demonstrates the organically developed brutal demon known as Quo Vadis and displays their untouchable talent in a five and a half minute experience that will change your life.

The end of this song is spectacular. The classical outro is introduced by the guitars trading absolutely phenomenal solos with the bass rumbling from beneath to unleash one of its own. Obitus is a formidable track and a glimpse of what's to come with these Quebec legends.

Their new album is being meticulously recorded as we speak and I for one can't wait to delve into the deep realm of QUO VADIS once more.

Check out this beautifully insane track here.

CROSSED STREAMS - Somniphobia (2010)

CROSSED STREAMS - Somniphobia

The Epitaph's Rating: 7 / 10

A one man metal machine from our Capital region, Crossed Streams began in late 2008 with a sheer desire to join the melodic death metal sound of today, with the speed and riffs of late '80's thrash metal. The results of his hard work, is a 7 track recording entitled Somniphobia. The release is layered with a barrage of guitar tracks sheering the listener in half. The rumbling bass pulsates throughout the recording pulling everything together. Meanwhile rhythmic vocal chants, black metal growls and whispers call upon their minions to sing along with the music. All the elements are clearly defined which makes for a pleasurable listen through of this recording.

Personally though, the mix could use some mastering to ensure levels of the instruments were better balanced – lead guitar being too loud at times and the vocals could be more evenly balanced. However, allowing the listener to adjust to the entire album and remembering the sound that the composer wished to achieve, it may be said that the production result is what was desired. It's all relative to the individual listener I suppose. And yet, as this is my review so… this release could benefit with it being sent for mastering. That fact aside, this one man effort ought to be praised for the results that are presented.

The songs combine elements of black metal and classic thrash in the era of Kreator, Bolt Thrower, Entombed and other reminiscent early 90's Northern European metal bands mixed with elements of Sepultura and Slayer flavorings.

As this is a one man machine, I am uncertain if there’ll be live performances to showcase the talent represented here. But hey, Ottawa has talented artists so maybe people after hearing this effort would be willing to contribute to bring this music to the forefront and present it in a live setting.

Lastly, I know that we ought NOT judge a book by its cover, yet I will any ways! The cover artwork is from "The Triumph of the Genius of Destruction" by Mihaly Zichy, circa 1878 which is absolutely fantastic. However, the simplistic logo is crying out to be properly designed. SOMEONE please help Crossed Streams with a logo design! The current logo does not do this amazing monstrosity any justice!

All in all, a sick album done by a sick man! Somniphobia single-handedly (pun intended) delivers the great energy of early death metal with the sophistication of today's. Another notch on Ottawa's belt! Check it out!

ATHEIST - Jupiter (2010)

ATHEIST - Jupiter

The Epitaph's Rating: 10 / 10

Being a product of the early 90's metal it disheartened me when the Seattle-based grunge scene seemed to take over the airwaves and dominate, if not make extinct, the metal scene. Some bands adapted or got more aggressive underground where as many went by the way side. So many, in fact, that people only dreamt of them being resurrected and being capable of composing material reminiscent of their former selves at their prime. Such is the case with ATHEIST.

My communications started with Tony Choy who no longer is a member of the project. A sad fact unto itself as his talented chops are heard on 2 of Atheist's releases: Unquestionable Presence and Elements. His skills and talents also contributed to another band that has been a big influence on me - Cynic - with their pre-Focus material.

So the story goes that I was exchanging conversation with Tony Choy via Facebook and low behold a day or so later Kelly Shaefer was added to my profile and he and I got to schmoozing. This fan in particular was thrilled to speak with such a contributing influence of his youth within the metal genre. While conversing with Kelly I learned another interesting tidbit of history that a photographer from Spain who maintained for Atheist's website and live photos was in fact my first band's bassist. Such a small world!

Ok, so a few paragraphs in and I am still rambling on so let's get to the meat of things!

ATHEIST are back. And not just back, risen from the dead to make a short scream and then fade away back into the Florida everglades. No! These guys are back in full force! Their strong return is in the form of JUPITER. This release is full of their trademark elements that gave them the unique sound and notoriety that they stood proudly amongst the other talented Florida-based artists of the 90's era.

Jupiter's sound is bold, full and in your face, yet textured so well with all the signature harmonies and solo's that these talented artists know how to mold and shape their instruments, exemplifying ATHEIST with a new polished sound.

How 4 guys are able to create this big a sound with all the grooves, technical nuances, harmonic melodies and extra surprises that they do blows my mind. After 17 years they are still able to set the bar with this release. Their previous album, Elements was not received well and vastly under appreciated by many. I would be willing to bet that those lost fans will be drawn back to the earlier Atheist vibe with this release as it picks up where Unquestionable Presence left off.

What stands out for me on this album is Kelly Shaefer's unique voice. To many new listeners they may be turned off by the non-guttural tone and instead hear his mid to high tone range that he sings in. Trust me though, Kelly's energy on stage and unique sound will grow on you and you'll appreciate that this isn't a cookie cutter band like so many others out there. They deserve the attention and applause for going the extra mile to bring you balls heavy in your face music. Add to that the skilled drumming of Steve Flynn, who still ranks as one of metals top drummers with his varied stylistic rudiments that he fuses so poetically with the diverse riffs that Chris Baker and Jonathan Thompson bring to this band. Now I'd previously mentioned Tony Choy. As I understand it, he was in fact suppose to be a part of this recording but for reasons unknown he backed out of it which is disheartening for this listener. However, it's not to say that the bass is denied presence on this recording. Quite the contrary! The bass for me in this project has always stood out and maintained a unique voicing unto itself that it brought that extra punch, giving ATHEIST its distinct sound. Well we won't hear that Roger Patterson (RIP) has rolled over in his grave as the bass work of Jonathan Thompson carries on the qualities and distinction that previous bassists have contributed to the ATHEIST releases.

It is my philosophy that to stand out people must be willing to take a step in new directions or fuse elements that they enjoy into one vision. ATHEIST follows the same philosophy, I would like to believe anyhow, and they keep true to who they were so many years ago. With the release of Jupiter it is clear that they still have the passion, fuel, and fire to share their music with new and old fans.

Words really can't describe it. It isn't necessary to explain each song on here. Through and through these 8 tracks are killer from the lead track "Second to Sun" straight through to the closing "Third Person". These guys have managed to do what many deemed the impossible after so many years collecting dust. Well boys and girls I guess you will have to just go pick up a copy to believe it cause as I said before - ATHEIST ARE BACK!

CHARIOTS OF THE GODS - Reverence (EP) 2010

CHARIOTS OF THE GODS - Reverence EP

The Epitaph's Rating: 8 / 10

If you're a fan of Arch "Angela" Enemy and dig the atmosphere of power metal, then Chariots of the Gods will certainly appeal to your tastes. The musicianship showcased by these 5 local Ottawa-Gatineau fuckers is well represented on their 4 track EP Reverence. From the first track Signs of the Dead World one can enjoy their compositions in the vein of metal that seems to be flowing from within the streams of Sweden. However, this solid release comes from our very own Nation's Capital.

Reverence was recorded at Audio Valley and Liverpool Court Studio. Engineered and mixed by Steve Foley and mastered at Finnvox Studio by Mika Jussila in March 2010. The production of this release is very clear and clean. I would even hazard that there is a lot of digital enhancing used on elements of the guitar. On the track Exiles the drums start off with some unique electronic elements that vary from the rest of the recorded drum sound. It's great to hear a local band exploring sound scapes and incorporating twists on the old techniques, creating a classic familiarity with these 4 tracks presented on this EP.

Having never heard of this 5 piece before, I am stoked to discover new talent from Ottawa. This edition further showcases the diverse talent in our very own fucking city. Chariots of the Gods is an eruption waiting to happen -like a toe-curling orgasm coursing its way out- and a force to be reckoned with. Seeing these guys live will be a gooey treat! I know...I know...grosse!

Anyjizz, if you enjoy classic trash metal mixed with Swedish death metal I would surely recommend this solid release from this very talented local and explosive band!

IMMERSED - In The Ire of Creation (2010)

IMMERSED - In The Ire of Creation

Rating: 11 / 10 <-- What? I own this zine...I can make that happen. And yes, it's that fucking good!

Storming out of the Nation's Capital, IMMERSED is a brutal death demon tearing its way into the souls of the weak and destroying any ounce of remaining propriety. Their energy, technicality and masterful approach to the ever-so-duplicated death metal genre is setting them apart and with good fucking reason.

Their first full-length release In The Ire of Creation is truly amazing. Recorded and produced by Christopher Bradley (Beneath the Massacre) and mastered by up and coming legend Chris Donaldson at Garage Studios, In The Ire of Creation sets a standard to strive for. Every element of this recording is crisp. You can distinguish every instrument and every fibre of this band's passion for brutality. The recording itself captures the essence of what IMMERSED is: an unstoppable force!

The introduction had me wondering if I had just put in another death metal CD, and I already started jotting down notes of dis-ease. Fifty-eight seconds later, my pencil dropped and I did not write a single thing for the next 8 tracks. In fact, I didn't write anything for two days as I consumed myself with In The Ire of Creation.
Let me tell you something right fucking now: This album is all-consuming.

There are 8 gruelling tracks of technical, catchy death metal with the lashings of tasteful black metal that, just like crack is to the addict, makes you NEED to come back for more.
Mark Phillips, a vocalist from the darkest recesses of hell, delivers track after track of gut-slicing catchy lyrics. The vocal patterns he chose for the music are stellar and you WILL find yourself wanting to growl along with him, screaming until blood spills out from your still-raw throat.
Guitarists Stephan Meloche and Mike Chambers attack their instruments with precision and a determination that can only be compared to the insanity of the Final Solution! They manage to take something that has been done before and make it their own. Their complex riff structures and melodic undertones bring forth a pleasantly addictive array of technical death metal that makes your heart pump.
Gareth Allix crushes you with his solid bass work, holding the music together, like flesh on bones, allowing the maniacal Stefan Kushneriuk to abolish you with percussion. The drum work on this album is ridiculous. Who is this guy? Phenomenal! The double-bass attack leaves you gasping for air and his knack for groove gets spliced in at the most appropriate moments (you definitely have to check out their title track In The Ire of Creation!).

As a born and raised Ottawa metal head, I am proud to say these guys are local. This album is necessary and you must go buy it! From beginning to end, this album is the fucking tits! Personally, I think I'm still in shock as I was not expecting it to be so damn good.
In The Ire of Creation is the best album of 2010 and if Hell had a soundtrack, this would be the only record on tap!

MORTOR - Metal Ride (2010)

MORTOR - Metal Ride

Rating: 8.5 / 10

Need a fix of 90's thrash with a dash of the modern metal that is well executed? Then look no further. Mortor are a 5 piece from the Ottawa-Gatineau region, that bring a sexy mixture of thrash with modern metal elements to the scene. They have released their CD Metal Ride to the world and it is going to be like a chopper screaming down the highway, taking out anything that is in its way, and leaving a blood trail in its wake.

Having discovered this band during the night of their CD release, I must say it was a delight to the ear. They shared the stage with Accursed Spawn, System Divine, Augury and Aborted.

The album was engineered and mixed by Chris Bonavia and mastered by Matt Connell, who has worked with other bands such as: Deamon, Fuck The Facts, Exhumed and Remnants of a Deity among many other talented artists. Their knowledge and experience at the helm proves its worth on this fantastically produced recording, as all parts are clear and well defined without any compromise between the different instruments.

This 9 track full-length release is unrelenting right from the gripping opener Swallow My Hate that propels its listener into a head banging frenzy with its catchy riffs and tight drum grooves. If you enjoy classic thrash metal in the vein of Obituary, Sepultura and Slayer then I’d bet my first born child that this album will interest you!

ACCURSED SPAWN - Dismember The Informant DEMO (2010)

ACCURSED SPAWN - Dismember The Informant DEMO

Rating: 7/10

Here is a talented local group that I recently discovered. The band was one of the opening acts for a night that would prove to be a metal onslaught of 5 truly talented bands including Mortor, System Divide, Augury and Aborted. It truly was a show favorite of mine because of the mixture of talented artists that performed that evening.

Accursed Spawn were the one act that caught my undivided attention. This 5-piece metal machine knew how to put on a show. Not only was their sound tight and heavy but the fans were ready to fight a war as they raged into a mosh slam fest! It truly was a great performance. A few bonuses were their covers of Morbid Angel's Immortal Rites (a personal favorite) and something I have not before seen, fans demanding they perform an encore song even though they weren't the headliners. So Accursed Spawn performed Death's Crystal Mountain (a track I personally loathe) that was executed wonderfully.

Having never heard of this band I was curious to hear how they would capture their live performance onto a digital recording. Now I have praise and negative takes on what I heard.

For many listeners who have grown up listening to Death Metal since the 80's they can clearly hear some classic influences of Deicide, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Death, etc that have helped shape this band into who they are. Their live sound was a little muddy and similarly this recording is hard to decipher what is being played because of the noisy and raw sound that they chose to record to.
Listening to this demo in the car was a bit nostalgic. It reminded me of a time when death metal was fresh and when tape trading was one of the only ways to listen to new bands.
Dismember The Informant is a true-blue death metal demo!

Now, after all the smack that Lars Ulrich received for using a very toned down, acoustic kit that is raw it seems that the drummer here chose a similar sound for his kit. This particular listener isn't a fan of that sort of production on modern recordings as it demonstrates a lack of production skill. HOWEVER!!!! It would be necessary to ask the band themselves as too why they went with this sort of production and instrument sound for the recording. This album is raw, like freshly torn flesh from an unsuspecting victim!

The riffs are killer, the drums are intense and the vocals are diverse and well suited to the barrage of aggression that Accursed Spawn deliver.

Personally I see this band achieving lots of attention. Taking advantage of modern production skills for their full-length record will truly make their music something incredible to listen to. That aside, this 3 song demo is definitely worth adding to your collection and should be embraced with the same fervor we once had when classic death metal albums first made their way into our home stereos.

ENDEMISE - Endemise EP (2010)

ENDEMISE - ENDEMISE EP

Rating: 9.5/10

These ghoulish young lads hail from Barrhaven, Ontario. Having met the man and visionary behind the project, Dale Sauve back in 2008, I have seen this band flourish from your average garage metal band into a solidified professional attitude and hard working unit. Like many projects, there is often the struggle to find the right mix of musicianship and time taken to create a bands true identity with their sound. After much sweat, blood and tears these guys are a unit to be reckoned with.

Endemise are gaining lots of notoriety in the local scene and touring many parts of Canada has brandished them with the attention they certainly deserve. Their live show compliments their hard efforts in the studio. With computer integration into their live performances, fans get to appreciate all elements that are fused into the studio offerings.

In January 2009, Endemise released their first full-length album, Unearth The Throne. Produced by Mike Bond at Pebble Studios, the album introduced Endemise with a well polished yet raw metal sound that was received with great enthusiasm in the Ottawa metal scene.

This 4-piece musical virtuosity have such a shared creative vision that fuses crushing black metal guitar rhythms, pounding, technical drum precision and low bass intensity while various textures of string and choir orchestration add a sinister atmosphere overall.

Endemise have just released a mind-bending 4 track EP that was recorded and mixed by Mike Bond, Dale Sauve and Endemise over the course of Oct 2009 to April 2010 in Ottawa. The EP was mastered by Mike Bond and Endemise. Artwork and was designed by Dale Sauve, a man with many developing talents.

"Procreator" viciously assaults the listener and pulls them along the horrid journey that will certainly keep the listener gripped to their seats as they are dragged along for the nearly 20 minute trail of vile deceit. Haunting guitars, pounding drums, lyrical mastery and orchestral samplings collectively contribute to a masterful recording that bombards the listener. "The Harvesting" with its breakdowns, classic metal riffs and melodic harmonies stands fair with the best of them. "Within The Oak Forest" is an enchanting blistering adventure that lures you in and takes hold unrelentingly leaving the deep sharp claws of the gargoyles embedded in your still-bleeding flesh. "Gargoyles", a track with neo-classical melodic elements fused with blunt-force brutality rounds up the EP just the way it should. This album is certainly one that will be played over and over again for this listener.

Endemise's drummer, David Sauve has already received some highly dignified attention from reputable SICK DRUMMER magazine. For a small town band out of the Nation's Capital, this sure is a reflection of their hard work and talent. Canadians everywhere should take note of this outlet and mirror their recipe for brutality!

All in all this self-contained foursome are just about to unleash their barrage of metal mayhem onto the people and we can't wait to hear more from these young lads.

Sink your claws into this EP and your soul will be darkened forever!

THE LAST FELONY - Too Many Humans (2010)

THE LAST FELONY - Too Many Humans

Rating: 9.0/10

Too Man Humans is the most recent release by these young but very talented Montreal-based artists. This five-piece outfit have blossomed into a professional and brutal maturity reminiscent of fellow Quebec artists such as Despised Icon, Beneath The Massacre and Cryptopsy.. Their hard work on this album takes their previous release, Aeon of Suffering and buries it deep within the rubble of a new catastrophe. Too Many Humans is some next level shit!

The production of this masterful collection of songs demonstrates the band's maturity and raises the brutality bar. The new album was recorded, engineered, and mixed at Montreal's Garage Studio by Chris Donaldson (Beneath The Massacre, The Agonist, etc.), and mastered by Pierre Remillard (Misery Index, Despised Icon, Ion Dissonance, Beneath the Massacre). Artwork comes courtesy of Felix Rancourt (Despised Icon, Beneath the Massacre). The 9 tracks leave the listener craving more and more of this band. They are relentless.

Highlights of the album for this listener is the song "No One Would Notice If You Died" as the band takes your average break down and is able to give it their own twisted twist. It's a chant that you will surely be belting out in your most hellish nightmares. Vocalist Joss Fredette brings the inner demons within him out into the open air, growling the most foul beliefs as a preacher at his pulpit. A powerful voice behind powerful music!

Montreal is known for extreme metal bands and there have since been a lot of copy cats that quickly get swept under the rug. This band however seems to draw on their influences and shape their song creations into masterful tunes that will continue to draw people to their talented recordings and live performance. Guitarists Dom Grimard and Felix Roberge know how to bring key elements together with riffs that trade off with precise intensity, making their writing styles one to pay attention to. The drumming on this extremely mind blowing effort is by Vince Menard with his bullet hands and feet combined with his knowledge behind the kit that aren't limited to just speed.
By the way, listen to their single "Too Many Humans" over and over and over again. It's a brutal, killer and catchy track that truly makes the bass work of Seb Painchaud reverberate within the darkest recesses of your screaming soul.

I appreciate that the band limited the interlude parts primarily to the first track "We Are Future Housing Developments For Maggots" and added samples to the track "Televisionary" that don't detract the listener from the brutal experience that The Last Felony wish their listeners to be a part of. This group is quite talented and worth your time to listen to. They are a fucking force to be reckoned with and definitely one to witness live when they bash their way into your hometown! This album must be a staple in your 2010 collection of metal as it is easily one of the best albums of the year!

DECREPIT BIRTH - Polarity (2010)

DECREPIT BIRTH - Polarity

Rating: 7/10

The mighty Santa Cruz-based project have unleashed a new excerpt to their discography. Full of mastery and moments of elation this band is one to be aware of. This album is for those who are large fans of Chuck Schuldiner's style of writing memorable melodic riffs. Throw in elements of Death and mix in extreme metal elements and you have Decrepit Birth.

The demonic and enigmatic neo-classical introduction to the album sets the pace for what's to come - a ride down technical lane, fused with a brutal and relentless assault.
One of the most intense offerings is the instrumental "Solar Impulse", a spacey, prog-metal rocket launch into head banging glory that should please fans. As well, take a listen to "Mirroring Dimensions", a 4:30 minute shred fest filled with awe-inspiring time signature changes, neck-snapping riff shifts and double-bass thunder.

This first few listens through made this listener appreciative of the band. The production of the release seems to me to be very bass driven and would be improved if there were more mids, in my opinion.

Having seen this band live a few times it is essential to mention that Decrepit Birth's guitar sound is fundamental to this project as the ENGL amps fuel the project with brutal, heavy-thick and tight crunch distortions and strong lead sounds. Vocally I am not as much of a fan of the projects choice and I feel they could find someone else that would compliment them better.

I don't have much to say about this release. It is a decent effort yet after a few tracks I lose interest. As well, I am not familiar with their previous releases so very much to know the progression of their albums. A friend of mine described this album as predictable and expected. Like many bands they reach a plateau and know what ingredients and recipe are essential to make a good album.

One key element that this listener was pleased to see was that the artistry of Dan Seagrave was commissioned to create imagery that represents what the band envisioned as part of the entitled album Polarity.

Most certainly this band is a worthwhile listen to and to experience live. Check these guys from the Golden State out. They come from a State that seems to be generating a lot of young talented death metal acts. Come and get Polarised!

INSURRECTION - Prologue (2008)

INSURRECTION - Prologue

Rating: 9/10

These French Canadian maniacs hail from across the Ottawa River in Gatineau, Quebec. The 5 piece band is made up of talented musicians and their premiere CD offers up 7 scorching tracks.

In my opinion their music shares remnant influences of Montreal's Oblivion by fusing groovy catchy riffs, samples, odd time signatures, counter point with melodic elements.

Breaking the musicians down:

The vocals are strong yet diverse with technical guitar elements that compliment very well. Drums are tight and pummelling; yet personally, I feel they could have been louder in the overall mix but just slightly kick/snare. The overall experience is presented to the listener with a strong accomplishment for these guys. Ottawa should be proud!

The packaging and production along with their website is top quality.

Check these guys out if opportunity presents itself as they bring the energy to the stage and hold nothing back.

REVOCATION - Existence is Futile (2009)

REVOCATION - Existence is Futile

Rating: 8.5/10

As this is their sophomore release, I must say these guys have again proven they are wizards when it comes to melding thrash with melodic technical writing styles. They maintain their clear defined influences and present a solid release to follow up their previous effort release, Empire of the Obscene.

Saying this however, as this band is fairly new to my ears and listening to both albums back to back, I must say that their talent to write a full length album containing challenging riff structured songs to appease the listener was better achieved on their freshman release. It is hard to say what album will appease anyone who listens to this band cause all the elements are there on both CDs.

As this is my review not yours I am entitled to my opinion. So don't take another person's criticism so intently, listen to the music for yourself and make your own opinion.

Revocation executes blending genres very well. Vocally however, I must say I am not truly fond of some of the hard core vocal stylings as some others maybe but still they manage to not fall into the likings of Trivium and stand apart as they appeal to a more aggressive and diverse styles of playing.

You can clearly hear the Megadeth/Slayer riffings along with Pantera bluesie type guitar solo and bridge riffs that dive right into a pummelling break down or melodic suit that then shred or grind into a plethora of directions. Always a treat to discover a band that can take old ideas and make them fresh for new listeners or capture the interest of old listeners and give a twist to appeal to both listeners.

Give this band a chance. Check them out. And hey if you prefer one, both or none of their albums at least you gave them a chance. They are a band with great talent and surely will be worth checking out when opportunity allows. I must say to witness this 3 piece live and to hear how they execute this material will surely be worthwhile.
